Residency Program

Triangle is a visual arts residency in New York founded in 1982. Our mission is to provide a life-changing working environment for committed artists through studio-based opportunities to experiment and create new work; shared community with other artists that lasts a lifetime; introduction of curators and other experts to the work at crucial times; cultivation of new and diverse audiences with public programs, such as open studios; and meaningful exposure to and interaction with the surrounding Brooklyn community and the wider world.

Triangle offers spacious studios and a dynamic artistic community to support the development of new artwork. Triangle's founding concept and current programs de-emphasize professionalization and specific outcomes, instead allowing artists space and time to focus on their ideas and process.

The Triangle residency focuses on building community. Residency gatherings and visits from curators occur several times a month as well as a seasonal open studio. Interested applicants should be enthusiastic about participating in these meetings and events. 

RESIDENCY

  • Three month residencies occur during seasonal cycles: December - February, March - May, June - August, and September - November.  Applicants will specify their preferred cycles in the application. 

  • Curators are invited several times a month for private studio visits with each artist. Visitors are invited taking in consideration the practices of current residents. 

  • Regular social gatherings and studio discussions are organized to build community amongst residents. 

  • Residents are encouraged but not required to organize a program during the residency that will directly benefit their practice, such as a small workshop, a conversation with invited participants, or other customized event. A small budget is provided for this event.

FEES

  • There are no additional fees associated with the residency.

  • Residents are responsible for costs and coordination of their own housing, travel, visa, and materials.

ELIGIBILITY 

  • US-based or international artists or collectives working in any medium or discipline may apply. We accept artists at different stages in their careers, working in many different mediums. Collectives, collaborators, and groups may apply to our Residency Program through our open call. If accepted into the program you will share one studio space. Please submit one application on behalf of the entire group and clarify in the application that you are applying on behalf of a collective.

  • Because of our large-scale studios, we give preference to artists who need space to work. This residency supports practices that require a studio, and is generally geared toward visual artists. Performing artists who can describe how a visual arts-oriented, studio-based residency would benefit their work are welcome to apply. 

  • Artists should not be enrolled in a degree-granting educational program during their residency. If you are currently enrolled but will be graduated by the time of the residency you are applying for, you are welcome to apply.

SPACE

  • Private studios ranging from 180 - 500 square feet with 13 foot high ceilings.

  • 24-hour access

  • Communal area, basic kitchen, freight elevator, trash removal, slop sinks, and internet access.

  • Basic communal tools such as hammers and drills. No workshops such as wood shops or metal shops on site. 

  • Access to Materials for the Arts for additional materials and supplies

  • Artists are not allowed to sleep in their studios. If you are accepted into the program you are responsible for securing your own housing during your residency period. 

  • If you intend to share your studio space with another person or people, you must apply jointly in one application as collaborators or a collective.

EXPECTATIONS

  • Successful residents demonstrate that they can manage their time to work productively during this short, 3-month residency; and can set aside significant time each week to be in the studio.

  • All residents are expected to spend a minimum of 15 hours a week working in their studio.

  • Residents should be enthusiastic about participating in residency meetings and events, including residency gatherings, visits from curators, and a seasonal open studio.

ACCESSIBILITY & COVID SAFETY

  • Studios are located on the third floor, accessible by stairs and elevators. The studios, communal spaces and building facilities are wheelchair accessible.

  • Restrooms are located approximately 150 feet from the studio spaces. Triangle is a tenant in a building with shared facilities, and we regret that there are no designated gender neutral restrooms. 

  • All residents are required to be up to date with COVID vaccinations, or provide a valid reason for exemption. 

  • Residents should be prepared to follow appropriate COVID safety regulations depending on the time of their residency; these may include mask requirements.

REVIEW PROCESS

  • Applications are reviewed by a small group of Triangle alumni, curators, critics, and other professionals in the art field.

  • Applicants will be asked to describe their artistic practice, their residency plans and why they are seeking a residency at this time.

  • Artists will have the opportunity to describe any accommodations they would require due to disability, childcare or family caregiving, or other circumstances.
