Justin Davy & Sean Jacobs: Intersections of Art & Protest from South Africa and Beyond

March 15, 2016 at 7pm

The recent student protest movements in South Africa have been momentous, marking a moment in which black students decided to no longer remain silent about their experiences on school campuses—spaces which do not reflect them in either their architecture or institutional ethos.

Artists too have increasingly been gravitating back to political subject matter, deriving from current and historical issues such as corruption in government, economic redress, police violence and land ownership.

Davy and Jacobs will explore these recent events as a materialization of the political realities in South Africa.

Justin Davy is a curator, artist and member of the collective Burning Museum. Based in Cape Town South Africa, his work deals with the themes of forced removal, gentrification, colonial archives and the history of protest. Davy is in residence at Triangle in March 2016.

Sean Jacobs is on the international affairs faculty of The New School. A native of Cape Town, South Africa, he founded and edits the website Africa is a Country.
