Making art is often a pretty lonely place, and so can motherhood be. Despite the love and joy it brings, it can feel emotionally and mentally isolating at times. The works in this show are all made by artists who are mothers. While their individual practices are rooted in other themes and interests they have generously allowed their works to be part of this show. This exhibition tries to capture the entangled and sometimes conflicted feelings of art-making and motherhood. While the experience of becoming a mother is not uniform, the struggle to stay afloat as an artist and mother, making ends meet financially and timewise, is common.
Historically, female artists turned mothers often cease to exist because financial and social structures don’t leave much choice to prioritize differently. Some private collectors and gallerists avoid buying art from or working with female artists of reproductive age, because it is considered a risky investment. ‘If you want a career don’t have children’ is a phrase still in use today. All these variables leave young artists to believe they have to choose one or the other and artist mothers hesitate to mention this part of their lives publicly. Despite all of this, many artist mothers remain active today. This exhibition is purposely seen through female optics, and aims to allow for a wider interpretation and understanding of the inherent battles of being a mother and artist.
