In the course of waiting…
Live Drawing with Layo Bright
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 3PM EDT
On Instagram Live
Triangle artist in residence Layo Bright is collaborating with visual artist Olatunde Alara for an Instagram Live drawing session based on the theme of waiting. With a global pandemic, environmental, social and political tension, most of the year has been spent in lockdown and has seen ongoing protests. In the course of waiting reflects on the year so far and how the artists access hope, light, and community through these times. We invite you to join the artists for this conversation and drawing session, as they tap into creativity for release, healing and idea-sharing.
Olatunde Alara is a self-taught, multi-media, Visual Artist based in Lagos, Nigeria, whose works are driven by a DIY ethic. Drawing from a range of influences which include graffiti, elements of street art, contemporary art, abstract & experimental art, Olatunde Alara has an interest in challenging the conservative attitude of a Lagos art scene still bound by respectability and profit, through various mediums such as drawings, performance art, site-specific installations, collages, and public art, to recenter critical thought as an important aspect of art-making in Nigeria.
Layo Bright (b. Lagos, Nigeria) explores themes of migration, inheritance, gender and family in her works. Through portraits, textiles and scarification, she unfolds both family and collective West African histories—highlighting the formation of legacy. Concerned with examining the relationship with lines (identity, culture, ancestry, family, migration, trade) Bright literally and figuratively uses materials to map experiences, as an African woman, within and outside the African diaspora/continent. Bright received her MFA in Fine Art (Hons.) from the Parsons School of Design (2018). Awards include the UrbanGlass Winter Scholarship Award (2020), and the International Sculpture Center’s 2018 Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award (2018).
