"Damon and I met at a Zen meditation group. The impulse to collaborate is rooted in that shared experience devoted to observing one's mind. There, thoughts float by as abstract patterns. A big effort to focus on and count breath. A big effort not to lose count. An entire universe of sounds and gradual light changes are observed. Awareness is rotating like the focusing lens of the camera. A repeating melody floats in and out, a 1930s Russian song titled (roughly translated) The Weary Sun. As the sun sets, the awareness shifts from the frenzied world all around, to the inner space - surreal, ghostly figure floats by, reciting fragments of thoughts, song lyrics, poems, and feelings, expressed in movement and bizarre ritual. These moments of “action” are perforated by long pauses and repeating, percussion-like sound of the accordion breath, in/ out, used as a metronome or a rosary, which cut the “actions” mid-way sometimes, fragmenting the fragments even further.
